The Roxbury Nine crossed bats with the Hartford Senators last Saturday
for the first time in three years. These two clubs are noted throughout
the vintage circuit for their aggressive hitting and tight defense, but
until their most recent match, our hometown boys have never claimed a victory
over the Senators. Saturday’s hotly contested match was nothing less
than an outstanding performance by the Nine leaving the Senators literally
in the dust with a final score of 19-3.
It began with the Roxbury boys tallying three runs in the first when Greg
Funck took the rubber for the nine and struck out three of their first four
strikers. The second inning was quiet, but the Nine’s bats exploded
in the third as twelve runs hit the scoreboard. The senators answered with
three of their own, but wouldn’t cross the plate again for the next
six innings. The Nine brought one in in the seventh and eight and an additional
five insurance runs in the top of the ninth.
Greg Funck was brilliant for the Nine with fifteen strikeouts as he only
gave up five hits. Matt Walker had a remarkable day at the plate with three
home runs, one being a grand slam and Chris Hynes also whacked one out of
the park for a two run homer in the third. The Nine brought one across the
plate in the seventh and eighth and tallied an additional five insurance
runs in the top of the ninth. Roxbury will meet up with the M.A.C. this Saturday
at high noon in historic Kirkside Park. For more information www.roxburyny.com
