Just can't wait for summertime, sunshine, BBQ and base ball? The Roxbury Nine vintage base ball champs are chomping at the bit too. On Saturday, April 19 from 2-6 p.m., they're commandeering the grill at the Public Lounge, roasting up some fun to give us all a taste of summertime.
"We love our base ball players and they can really grill, too," said
Public Lounge proprietor Jill Healy. "We'll put some base ball action
on the big screen, leave the infielders in charge of the BBQ, and make sure
the Pabst is very very cold."
The Town of Roxbury's surrey will be out and about and fun!raiser guests can hop on board for a ride at $1 per minute. In the late afternoon, event organizers will try out a unique and unorthodox "sponsorship" auction for fun. Team memorabilia, like T-shirts, base ball hats and neoprene can "jerseys" to keep your beverages of choice cool will be on offer. There's no cover charge to attend.
"Our theme this season is 'the best of the past is coming home again,'" said team manager Peg Ellsworth. "We're heading into our ninth season, and we'll be playing a lot of home games, so our local fans and visitors can see plenty of base ball action all summer long."
The addition of a new vintage team in the neighborhood, the Fleischmanns'
Mountain Athletic Club, gives both clubs many more opportunities to play
without travelling. The Nine will open its home season on Saturday, May 17
in Roxbury's Kirkside Park and will play on both Saturday and Sunday of Memorial
Day Weekend in Fleischmanns historic ball park. The two teams will also meet
in Oneonta's Damaske Field on July 4.
The Nine and the MAC will meet at least six times this summer before the Harry M. Keator Vintage Base Ball Tournament. Held each Labor Day weekend, the tournament brings many of the Northeast's toughest vintage competitors for two full days of base ball action in Roxbury during "Turn of the Century" festivities.
"There is one really exciting trip in store for the Nine this year: we've been invited to the Vintage Base Ball Federation's World Series in Westfield, Massachusetts," said Ellsworth. "We'll keep updates on our web site during the series. And, you better believe we'll do our best to bring home that cup, too."
