Driver Jerry Maxwell and his substitute driver-in-training Ruth Reynolds were proud to show off their new set of wheels, the Indy V, the newest member of the Delaware County Office for the Aging’s bus fleet.

The bus was christened in April and helps ferry local seniors to Albany and Oneonta during the week for shopping and socializing. “We worked hard to ensure that our seniors and physically challenged folks have a way to get out and about, so it’s no coincidence that we named this coach the Independence V,” said Roxbury Supervisor Tom Hynes who, as chair of the county’s Committee on the Planning, Recreation, Culture & Community, was instrumental in getting the bus rolling.
Residents of the Grand Gorge Senior Apartments like Robbie Renz and other local residents like Art Zier returned from their foray loaded, with groceries and other goodies for the week.

Ruth pronounced the Indy V “a piece of cake” to maneuver. The bus was funded with $55,000 in Good Neighbor money and an additional grant from the state legislature to enhance the bus for special needs.
If you are an elder or physically challenged and would like to get on for the ride, contact the Office for the Aging at 607 746-6333. The bus is also available for senior citizen groups to charter. Charter trips may be scheduled for Fridays through Mondays, some Tuesdays and evenings.
