So you want to be published in a magazine? Writers in the Mountains has invited writer, editor Debra Nelson-Hogan who will give an enlightening, informative, funny account of how this can happen. Debra will give a talk on what procedures she uses when evaluating free lance writers. She will speak at the Roxbury Arts Group on Vega Mountain Road, Roxbury, New York on Sunday afternoon, October 21, 2007 from 1 - 3 p.m. Hogan states, "Most of my work has been business-related, so knowledge of a subject has been the most important, but there are some procedures that writers can follow. The writers that I have used the most often and paid the best were those that simply made my life easier."
Hogan will offer her own experience in changing fields (from international business to health/medical). She volunteered anywhere and anyway so that she could build credibility. Debra started out with the Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy Syndrome Association (RSDSA) as a volunteer with their annual fund raising dinner and later volunteered to reorganize the content of their newsletter. A year later she became managing editor of the newsletter and two years later had the PR/Communications contract. "I'll tell my story and then do a 'helpful' hints' and open it up to discussion."
Hogan has been a writer, editor, communicator, and educator for more than 30 years. She has edited several business-to-business magazines, including La Bobina (an apparel management magazine for the apparel industry in Latin America), Port News (a monthly international trade and transportation magazine for the Port of Charleston, South Carolina), and Safe Workplace (a bi-monthly magazine for the National Council on Compensation Insurance). In addition, Debra has edited The Paper (for Origami USA) and the RSDSA Review, a quarterly newsletter for the Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy Syndrome Association of America. She has hired freelance writers for each of these publications.
In addition to the publication mentioned above, Debra has written for Charleston Magazine (restaurant reviews and food articles), The American Shipper, Traffic World, The Pain Practitioner, Fibromyalgia Aware, the American Journal of Nursing, and other health or trade-related publications.
Debra is one of the founding members of the Backporch Storytellers in Charleston, South Carolina, and an alumna of the Just Say Yes Improv Group in New York City. She is currently President of Seersha, Ltd., a healthcare communications and education company based in New York City.
