Living in Roxbury

EVERYTHING OLD IS YOUNG AGAIN

On Saturday’s “Railride” into Roxbury, c.1898, visitors were enchanted and sometimes bemused by visions of days gone by. Treats included flower carts, a Beer Garden and Barbecue by the Public Lounge (along with a chance to meet the Public’s notorious founder, Dolly Eagan Fuller), sandwiches and cookies by Fane’s Family Deli and market carts with art and handmade soaps on sale. Suffragettes also made their opinions known (No Vote! No Fair!), but Earl Krom’s majestic horses took it all in stride as they ferried visitors throughout the hamlet.

Even if the year was 1898, Roxbury was looking very fresh and summery on Saturday, including scholar docents and fresh food vendors like the East Branch (serving ice cold Boylan’s sodas and authentic pizza and TasteBuds, with pastries, pies, preserves and PICKLES! Visitors arrived in Roxbury just as they would have 100 years ago, on the Delaware & Ulster Railroad. As the train pulled in the station, there was a magical moment as the Roxbury Brass greeted the disembarking guests. The Roxbury Nine base ball team bested their vintage rivals, the Bristol Blues in a doubleheader, and horse and buggy added to the relaxing, no-cars spring-time splendor.

A new Walking Tour brochure of Roxbury made its debut, a three-wheeled bike for two whirled through town and a new exhibit was featured in the Masonic Hall, while children enjoyed old-fashioned pastimes in Kirkside Park. Railride will be coming around again on July 7 and September 1, so make your reservations now and get on board!

"Railride" is funded in part by the Preserve America Grant Initiative, a program administered by the National Park Service and Advisory Council on Historic Preservation. Additional funding provided by the A. Lindsay and Olive B. O’Connor Foundation, Eleanor Naylor Dana Charitable Trust and the NYCH Speakers on the Humanities Program.
