Apple, Cut Paper and Glass Palladium/Platinum Print 10" x 8" |
Enderlin Gallery is proud to present the works of Robert Kozma. Kozma, a Guggenheim Fellow, vintage 1990, has several Manhattan shows to his credit and will be exhibiting a selection of his “Still Lifes” and “Landscapes”.
Photographers who are susceptible to natural wonders, earthly or human, are easy to understand. Natural beauty inspires them and they want to preserve and transmit it. Other photographers, like Kozma, have chosen a more complex route. He deliberately develops an unnatural subject and then shoots it with the intention of yielding something of greater beauty or interest. Kozma chooses the 19th century Platinum/palladium process which allow for a higher sensitivity to detail; a range of warmer tones and fine grain, contrast and rich blacks. The portrayed images, often resembling aquatints, are exposed on negatives to the sunlight. Vintage platinum/palladium prints look fresh decade after decade.
Several of the prints on display can be found in the collections of MOMA, the MET, and other distinguished venues. Auction record prices for this type of photographic process, have reached over $200,000 for works by Irving Penn, in the recent past. Kozma’s work is currently accessible for under $1,000.
By manipulating the lenses of his non-digital, large-format camera, Kozma photogaraphs intricately staged arrangements of common objects. The camera permits him to manipulate spatial relationships and perspective, flattening or deepening the picture. Many of his works have a surreal edge or a romantic aura, but nothing is as important as the light he captures.
