Rebecca Welz and Dale Trethaway, volunteers with the Heart of the Catskills Humane Society, were at Roxbury Central School recently, where they shared pet care tips and the rules of responsible pet ownership with Roxbury kindergartners, who were a very pet-savvy pack.

One lesson they demonstrated was how to greet a friendly dog on a leash, illustrated by Allon, Christian, Rose and Victoria: first, ask the dog’s owner if you can meet the pup, then with your hand curled in a fist, let the dog get a whiff of you! (This is how a dog gets to know you and it protects your fingers.) Finally, reach out to pet him.

If you’d like to explore age appropriate humane education at your school, contact Heart of the Catskills Humane Society staff at 607-746-3080.

Remember: Roxbury has a leash law, which means your dog should be on a leash and in your control when you take him or her for a walk. This is especially important in populated residential areas, like the hamlets of Roxbury and Grand Gorge.

If you have a dog control issue in your neighborhood, you can call Dog Control Officer Verna Dietrich at (845) 586-2854. If you need to license your pet, please visit the Town Hall or click here for more info.
