“Robes” Exhibit at RAG

Vintage bathrobes might not seem an obvious subject for a fine photographer, but through the eyes of  photographer Michael Gordon,  they become riveting objects of glowing intensity.    “Robes,”  an exhibit of Gordon’s giclee prints, will  be on view at the Old Bank Gallery at The Roxbury Arts Group from March 19th through May 20.   There will be an opening reception on Sat. March 10 from 2-4 pm.

Pair of Robes - Michael GordonMichael Gordon is the founder and creative director of Triumphant Color Studio and Gallery in Oneonta.   His eye for detail and the understanding of both the physics end of color and the fine art end has earned him international recognition and respect.  In 2000 he was presented with an “innovator of technology” award from Electronic Publishing magazine, a printing industry periodical.

Gordon uses a  spectrophotometer and a high-quality printer to produce limited edition prints for museums, galleries and artists across the country and in Europe.  He started making eight-color ink-jet Giclee prints about two years ago.  The process involves first shooting the original, digitally manipulated photograph, producing a 4-inch by 5-inch transparency. Gordon then scans the transparency into a computer and compares the colors with the original. Eventually, the image is sent to the Giclee printer and ultimately examined by Gordon for imperfections.  The perfectionism that he brings to this work when he’s making prints of the work of other artists, he applies to his own work.

He says, “My definition of fine art has always been works that simply hold your attention – something you can look at day after day and it continues to stir you up.  My longest romance has been with ink and paper.  My intimate understanding of how ink and paper combine into timeless beauty is what as an artist and printer I seek to achieve.

I like to dissect my work into two main parts: The first, acting like a musician, I am able to make the printing press sing for me, much like the French horns in a symphony. The second part is as an editor.  Taking my raw photos and editing down the color, some portion of space, dimensional boundaries, and movement which becomes a work which causes your eyes to fill in unseen details and feeling within a single printed image.”

The Old Bank Gallery, on Main St. Roxbury, is open Mondays through Fridays from 10am – 4 pm, on Saturdays from 1-4 pm and by appointment.  Call  (607) 326-7908 for more information.
