The Roxbury has already topped hotel and lodging "bests" lists world wide by creating its own genre of funky, comfy boutique hideaway. Building on the success of its "contemporary Catskills chic," The Roxbury Motel will expand this spring to offer its hippest of 'happening' lodgings to twice as many travelers. "As we grow, we're developing some irresistible new amenities and design features that will set The Roxbury experience apart really from any other hotel in the world." said proprietor Greg Henderson of Masserson Properties, Inc. "We will be exploring some ideas in design concepts and 'guestroom experience' that will add a new whimsical twist on the old-fashioned, cookie cutter hotel room."
In the short two years since it opened its signature chartreuse-lime doors
in this historic and quaint mountain hamlet, The Roxbury has been anything
but cookie cutter. In fact, The Roxbury's whimsical turn on retro motor
lodge has become a trip in and of itself, attracting visitors from around
the world to its playful, contemporary casual mountain digs. Turning people
away almost every weekend has become the only un-fun aspect of Joe Massa
and
Henderson's joint dramatic venture. As they grow to accommodate demand,
these partners promise to keep what's best about The Roxbury, using
"research, research, research" to give both their guests and the
hamlet more
of a good thing.
Cheeky, but ain't misbehavin'
For starters, the expansion will be much in keeping with the charming but
low key character of this unspoiled Catskills village. The 4,400-sq. foot
addition will mirror the simple elegance of the current Roxbury exterior
with its white columns, black shutters and those cheerful, limeade doors.
The new wing will be positioned to keep streamside and mountain views intact
while offering all guests easy access to its spacious, landscaped back lawn.

Two interconnected suites on the top floor of the new wing will make it possible for the Roxbury to host parties as large as 12 guests, while the five cozy rooms on the first floor will maximize open floor space for the ultimate in Euro-style intimacy. With 10' and 11'-foot ceilings and open floor plan designs, the loft-like feel in all the rooms is designed to provide expansive contrast to the typical "motel" experience while sacrificing none of the cozy factor.
Come on in, the water's wonderful...
Connecting the new
addition to the existing Roxbury will be two special features unique to this
corner of the Catskills: a luxurious spa and sauna facility complete with
toasty fireplace on the lower level and on the upper level, an expanded outdoor
deck with its own fire pit for year-round relaxation, wine-tastings and mountain
views. The first floor spa center will feature a large octagon-shaped, sunken
super-jet hot tub, Finnish sauna room, bathroom and shower facilities and
a private massage and treatment space for the wide variety of holistic therapies
offered on site. Massa and Henderson hope that the spa facility will become
an asset to the local community as well as a special treat for their guests.

With the expansion, The Roxbury will kick these popular goodies up a notch or three. Guests will wake up (even in the middle of the night) to radiant floor heating in all the bathrooms. Large flatscreen Plasma TVs will do justice to that library of first-run and classic movies. Smaller, recessed flat screens in the suite bathrooms will let you take your favorite thriller for a luxurious soak. Internet access will be expanded to seamless WI FI throughout the property, from bedside to streamside, and enhanced voice mail systems in each room will allow travelers to connect with home and business any time of the day or night.
With ground-breaking on the $800,000 project scheduled for mid-September (complete with chartreuse shovel), The Roxbury hopes to have its new addition in full retro-chic swing by early summer 2007. And that's a happy thing for this area of the Catskills, where visitors are essential to a healthy 'eco-centric' balance of wilderness, watershed and a sustainable economy.
Curiouser and curiouser . . .
The Roxbury has been anything but cookie cutter The Roxbury has already topped hotel and lodging "bests" lists
world wide by
creating its own genre of funky, comfy boutique hideaway. Tucked right in
the midst of all the traditional Catskills pleasures - skiing, snowboarding,
mountain biking, kayaking, fishing, hiking, golfing, antiquing and
old-fashioned country auctions - The Roxbury has also become a destination
in its own right. You can anticipate more of that theatricality with this
expansion, with key aspects of the design kept as tightly under wraps as
the
little green men in Area 51 of Roswell, New Mexico.
"In creating The Roxbury several years ago, we challenged ourselves to create an indoor experience ... that resonates with the high drama and 'oooh' factor of the spectacular Catskill landscape all around us," said Joe Massa. "Now we can amplify, or perhaps I should say 'wow-ify' on what our guests have enjoyed the most and keep coming back for. I can't say more about that creative percolation at present," Massa added with a grin, "But I do promise you will not be disappointed."
