Unearth the hidden secrets and timeless characters of Roxbury

Ghost Tour rattles the hamlet's scintillating skeletons out of the closet, church, and parlor

A hard-nosed businesswoman mourns the loss of her mate and six children to the slow ravages of consumption . . . an unconsolable young wife paces on her porch, waiting for a soldier sweetheart who will never return . . . a brilliant all-star athlete returns home to meet a mysterious and macabre fate . . . these are but a few of the spectral eminences that inhabit the storied gables and garrets of elegant Main Street Roxbury. On October 21, they could well be summoned from their otherworldly slumbers as they hear the solemn clop of horses' hooves again. When the Victorian Ghost Coach Tour passes their solemn haunts, will they emerge from their shadowy realm, wordlessly reliving their tales of eternal sorrow and passion?

an unconsolable young wife paces on her porch, waiting for a soldier sweetheart who will never returnYou'll have to be aboard the Ghost Tour Coach on the moonless night of Saturday, October 21 to see who among Roxbury's most celebrated spectres will deign to appear, as mystery meets history during the dark of the moon in this historic hamlet. In Roxbury, humble beginnings and great wealth grew side by side and often made matches. The grand dames lining Main Street are themselves looming spectres of a past bustling with hotels and taverns, a natural breeding ground for melodrama, legend and secrets. Even if you're too scared to peek at the shadows emerging from the dark, you'll come away with a rich taste of Roxbury's past and the most human elements dredged from the bottomless well of its history.

a brilliant all-star athlete returns home to meet a mysterious and macabre fateYou can board the elegant hotel coach at the Public Lounge on Bridge Street, the Oasis at famed Corner Store (where the noisier ghosts of Dolly Reed's tavern patrons are still heard of an evening), or at the East Branch on Main, and snuggle tight as your guide brings the personalities of the past two centuries to life. With a little help from the beyond!

The Roxbury Victorian Ghost Tour departs this realm at 6 p.m. Saturday, October 21, and approximately every 45 minutes thereafter. Tickets are $10. The tour is most appropriate for ages 12 and up. Call 607 326-3722 for more details — if you dare!
