With the entire hamlet of Roxbury on the State and National Register of Historic Places, it's impossible to drive down its maple-lined Main Street without wondering what some of those magnificent 19th century houses look like inside!
On Saturday, September 2 from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. several of these
homes and historic public buildings will be open for the 3rd annual “Historic Homes of Roxbury” house
tours.
This year, thanks to the Preserve America grant initiative administered by the National Park Service and the O’Connor Foundation, researchers have been hard at work developing scripts that not only discuss architectural qualities, but the social history of each home. Many docents will deliver their tour in the “first person”, and bring the house to life in a way that is sure to transport you back to the turn of the 20th century.
In addition, Tour participants are guaranteed to walk away with extensive knowledge of the pristine 19th century homes that make up Roxbury’s Historic Hamlet and how interior design was dictated by 19th century social customs and technology.
The Historic Homes of Roxbury house tours are part of the larger Turn of the Century Days and Harry M. Keator Cup Vintage Base Ball Tournament. Proceeds from the house tour are to benefit Kirkside Park and the Roxbury Library Association.
Tickets are $10 per person or $8 for students/seniors—babes in arms are free. Children must be accompanied by adults. Tickets are limited and may be purchased in advance at the Roxbury Town Hall (607) 326-3722 and the Roxbury Library (607) 326-7901.
