The Roxbury Central School year was off and running on September 6, when RCS welcomed returning students and the brand new class of . . . 2019! (Scary, right?) Roxbury's enrollment this year is 355 (comparable to last year this time) and included 17 new students in addition to the incoming kindergarten class. Be sure to visit the school during its annual Open House on Thursday evening, October 12. RCS board meetings are always open to the public as well and normally meet at 7 p.m. on the second Wednesday each month. On October 9, the meeting will start at 6:30 p.m. for a short public hearing on the school's Wellness Policy. You can always stay tuned to school happenings at the RCS website— the official on-line home of the Roxbury Rockets!
Those Roxbury Rockets will soon be getting a brand new scoreboard in the school ballfield, thanks in large measure to generous donation from the Class of 2006. A ribbon-cutting ceremony will be set in the near future, so stay tuned to your RoxburyNY calendar. A refurbished flagpole and the legendary "Finley Rock" will join the new scoreboard on the western side of the field. On the athletic front, RCS hopes to inaugurate a Ski Team this year if all the details can be ironed out by the time the snow flies.
RCS policy allows students who have always attended RCS but who move out of the district to continue their education at RCS if they choose: six "out-of-district-but-not-new-to-RCS" students opted to stay at RCS this year. New staff at school include Kristin VanBenschoten, fourth grade; Michele Gugino, who came to Roxbury all the way from Delaware to teach secondary math; Lisa George in the cafeteria; and Karen Hinkley, school nurse.
Familiar faces in new places include Lisa Faraci who'll be leading the Orton-Gillingham Reading Program; Lisa Riley, who is now a first grade teacher and Joan Riordan who'll now be leading the Reading Recovery program. Carol Meckes, who has served as a long-term substitute in fourth grade is now teaching one of the two kindergarten classes and Tammy Allison will be the long-term substitute in sixth grade this year.
