RAG Photo Competition Winners

Carien Schippers Carien Schippers of Walton walked off with the Best in Show award for her photograph, Mule Ears at the Community Photography Show and Competition at the Roxbury Arts Group reception on Sunday, October 28th. The Dutch-born Schippers is a professional equine photographer who also won the red ribbon in the Animals category for Horse Drive and Grand Prize in the Catskills category for Catskill Morning. A professional equine photographer, Schippers took her first horse photograph in 1975 and hasn’t looked back since.

The four judges, Richard Sanford, Jill Ribich, Frans Edlinger and Tom Rapin who awarded Grand Prize, first second and third place winners in each of 9 categories, and selected the Best in Show from the 9 Grand Prize winners had their work cut out for them as they made their selection from the nearly 200 photographs submitted by 40 photographers. Even in the Student category, in which all 5 entries were by one young photographer, Cameron John Roberts who received a Grand Prize and first place, the judges were hard pressed to choose among five excellent photos.

NATURE: Grand Prize: Dorothy J. Carroll for Milkweed Magic; First Place: Alan Heins for Weathered #1; Second Place: Kevin Oppenheimer, Salamander Eggs; Third Place: Albert Hanok for Petrified Forest.

THE HUMAN EXPERIENCE: Grand Prize: Robert Lidsky for FasterDad!; First Prize, Alice Miller for Remembering; Second Prize, Robert Lidsky for Fair Game; Third Prize, Roshan Houshmand for Solitude.

ABSTRACT & ARTISTIC IMAGES: Grand Prize, Peter Kaiser for The Bean (Chicago); First Prize Albert Hanok for Abstract; Second Prize, Ralph Schoonebeek for What Lies…Around the Bend; Third Prize, Kevin Oppenheimer, Untitled #2.

THE CATSKILLS: Grand Prize, Carien Schippers, Catskill Morning, First Prize, Barbara Saslow, Spill on Ashokan; Second Prize, Barbara Saslow, Sunrise on the Lake; Third Prize, Chris Engel, View of Lake Wawaka 2.

TRAVEL: Grand Prize, Alan Heins, Brewing Storm, Arizona; First Prize, Curtis Cregan, The Bike (Amsterdam), Second Prize, Edna Brown, Nepalese Potter; Third Prize, Albert Hanok, Market in Old Delhi, India.

PORTRAITS: Grand Prize, David Burrows, Ethan; First Prize, Bonnie Mitchell, Rainy Day in Truro; Second Prize, Edna Brown, Lipstick I; Third Prize, Mark Weaver, Lil’ Miss Kate.

ANIMALS: Grand Prize: Carien Schippers, Mule Ears; First Prize: Robert Lidsky, Quite Pink; Second Prize, Carien Schippers, Horse Drive; Third Prize, Ralph Schoonebeek, Little Cat.

The photo exhibition will be in the Hilt Kelly Hall of the Vega Mountain Rd. arts center through November 25th.

The Community Photo Show is an annual event. All photographers, amateur and professional are invited to participate. A new panel of judges is selected each year.
