Michael Cooper, The Masked Marvel, at RAG

Cooper is an eye-popping visual artist and virtuoso mime whose exquisite performances have dazzled audiences for years. His one-man extravaganza combines breathtaking masks, stories, outlandish stilt dancing and a repertoire that ranges from madcap to sublime. His performance at RAG 3 years ago was a triumph. Nine sweep season opener double header in Smithtown

When one considers the Roxbury Nine boasts fours sets of brothers, Season Openera step father and son, an uncle and two nephews, it’s no doubt the club has been organically grown from a small rural town. However, the competitive edge that our boys of summer exhibit is remarkable considering the roster is developed from a total town population of 2500 people.

This last Saturday in Smithtown was a clear indication that the Nine are chomping at the bit to get their season underway. Game one, in the 1864 style of play, was a nail biter from the get go. With Roxbury winning the toss for home field advantage, the Brooklyn Atlantics tallied two at the top of the first. The Nine came back with one and shut the Atlantics down at the top of the second. keep reading

Roxbury secures Preserve America funds to extend heritage tourism year round

Heritage WeekendsRoxbury's heritage tourism programs have once again garnered Preserve America grant dollars to bring added economic stimulus to its educational and historic tourism activities throughout the year.

"Roxbury in the Gilded Age" was awarded more than $66,000 to augment and market successful summertime heritage tourism programs like "Railride into Yesteryear" and "Turn of the Century Days." In addition, Roxbury will be able to undertake historically-enriched events in October and during the holiday season. keep reading

Roxbury's Preservation Ordinance

The "Summary of Proposed Historic Preservation Ordinance" for the Town of Roxbury has been updated. The proposed "HISTORIC PRESERVATION LAW" has been added to the site as a downloadable pdf. We have also added some information on the preservation of Roxbury and a Q&A area.

PUBLIC HEARING WILL BE HELD ON MONDAY, MAY 12 AT 7PM AT THE TOWN HALL

We have established an Historic Preservation area in the Living in Roxbury section of this web site. All news about the preservation law will be available in that section.


TABITHA GILMORE BARNES TO SPEAK AT MAY 2008 ROXBURY LIBRARY ASSOCIATION TUESDAY FORUM

On Tuesday, May 13, 2008, at 1:00 p.m., Tabitha Gilmore-Barnes of Cornell Cooperative Extension in Hamden, New York, will offer a presentation on the dietary and nutritional benefits of low-salt, low-fat cooking.

Regular Tuesday Forum attendees will provide refreshments following Ms. Gilmore-Barnes' presentation.

The Roxbury Library Association Board of Trustees welcomes the public to all Tuesday Forum events at the Roxbury Library.

Located at 53742 State Highway 30, the Roxbury Library is directly opposite the town's United Methodist Church on Main Street.

Share Your Life, Installation art at RAG

by David and Diane“Share Your Life,” an installation project by David Kenny and Diana Cozzens will open at the Walt Meade Gallery of The Roxbury Arts Group on Saturday, April 26. An opening reception will be held from 2-4 pm.

The work on exhibit, created over a ten year period is show is a collection of found objects, sculpture, paintings, and prints. Kenny and Cozzens, who share a home in Oneonta, say that this show Is “ about living together, creating together, having a vision and sharing it. The work is a collection of our habits, rituals and our day to day living. These works are a portrait of who we are, where we have been and how we envision the future. keep reading

Cummings and Ardan in exhibit at RAG

Color explodes from the walls of the Old Bank Gallery at The Roxbury Arts Group in a vibrant exhibit of paintings by Barbara Ardan and Marie Cummings. The exhibit, on display through May 17th will host an artists’ reception on Saturday, May 3 from 3-5 pm. Gallery hours are Tues. – Sat. 10 am -4 pm and by appointment.

Both artists are watercolorists who bring to this traditional medium a whimsical and experimental approach. There are no pretty landscapes in this show, rather a range of arresting abstractions. keep reading

Roxbury Arts Group presence in the Stamford Community

A new stage is under construction, warm yet sophisticated colors are being applied to the walls and there is an eye-catching sign in the window announcing the advent of a new performance space in Stamford. The Roxbury Arts Group will soon be offering community arts programming in the Main St. space that was once the home of Performance Plus.

Maggie Cullen has been named Director of the yet to be named center and is busily engaged in developing a full program of concerts, workshops and arts programming that will be appealing to adults, families and children. “We want to be here to provide the kinds of programming that the community wants,” she says... keep reading
